My father-in-law, a devout Catholic, believes that the resignation of Pope Benedict is a sign of end times. Your thoughts please?

Because I base all my beliefs on the Bible, I would have to say that I do not believe the resignation of Pope Benedict is any indication of the end times since the Bible gives absolutely no indication that such an event is related to end times events. If your father-in-law does see some correlation between Benedict's resignation and something mentioned in Scripture, I would be happy to respond to that directly.

With my father-in-law, everything begins and ends on what the Catholic church says is holy. I do not have discussions about any Catholic beliefs because he becomes deeply offended. He walked in from church on the day the pope's resignation was reported and mentioned the end of the world. Naturally, I wanted to see where he was getting this from, but did not want to risk angering him. So I did some research (internet), and Malachy's prophecy turned up.
For a little background, I was baptized into Catholicism upon birth, joined the Baptist church upon getting married (FBK), and had since been attending a non-denominational church that was strictly Bible-based. My core belief is that only He knows when we will be judged.
I ask this to you because I value your knowledge on anything of a biblical nature.
