Pastor Mike,
We are reading the Bible to Joseph, however, I find myself changing words or adding in words to make the text more understandable to a 5-year-old. It is mostly changing third person pronouns (and a short discussion on "What is wine? What's a miracle?") and modifying some descriptors. We are using an HCSB currently. I grew up in a KJV only church, but I wonder if either of these are the best versions to use for one so young? Thoughts?

As for reading directly from the Bible, HCSB is probably as good as any, though you might take a look at the NIrV (the New International Reader's Version), which is written on a third grade reading level. I have to say that I am not that familiar with it, but it's probably worth a look. However, my favorite for children is The Jesus Storybook Bible, by Sally Lloyd-Jones (no relation to Martin Lloyd-Jones). It is really great, and you can check it out here: www.jesusstorybookbible.com/
